Hey everyone I am looking to upgrade/overhaul the following computer just wanted everyones advice. My problem is very similar to Racer7, who posted lower in the forum. We both have aging socket 754s with 6800gt's and don't know what to do.
He wants to upgrade for 300ish, I am throwing out the guts and upgrading.
Old Rig which was a beast 3 + years ago
AMD 64 Socket 754 3400+ at 2.6 ~10% oc
DFI Lan Party Nforce 3
1gb pc3200
Geforce 6800Gt
I will try to follow the metric provided in the sticky.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for.
75%Gaming, 20%office work, 5%minor photoshop
2. What YOUR budget is?
about 5-700 $US for replacing the processor, case, ram, mobo, and GPU.
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
US
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. None
5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Reusable Parts
19 inch viewable crt monitor 1600x1200- still love it even if it weighs 50 lbs-may get an LCD at some point
2 Samsung 16xDVD-RW drives
2 sata 300 gb western digital hdd
logitech keyboard, mx-518 mouse
500Watt Enermax PSU
Have an oem copy of Win XP
+-Audigy 2 ZS
6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Of course and here are my thoughts...
a) Processor- cost 75-200
Comes down to E2140, e6750 or q6600. I failed in my frys bf run to get the q6600 for <200. I will probably get the e6750 because for my tasks the quad seems a little redundant. I am open to spending a little more for the quad, but realistically I just want a cpu/mobo that I may upgrade in a yr+ if I so choose. With Neehalem down the line this may be a pipe dream but I want a new computer.
b)mobo- 1-150
Guidance here would be appreciated as I am stuck looking at the p5ks and the p35s.. The ones I am considering at the moment are:
ASUS P5K
Abit IP35 E
Gigabyte GA-P35T-DQ6
LANPARTY UT P35-T2R
I do not need anything fancy like wifi or multiple firewire. I am leaning towards either the Abit or the Asus ATM
c)ram- $80-100
4gb of ddr2-800 most likely the on-sale gskill
d)gpu- $220-260
Simple -either a 3870 ATI or 8800GT for approximately MSRP(If it happens). From the sound of it it looks like this will be the ATI but I don't really have a preference.
e)cases--I'm just browsing looking for the good deals. The antec 900 for $50 or someother deal will come by and I will jump.
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Mild to moderate OC on air, would be willing to use an aftermarket cpu cooler. Recommendations for good C2D coolers under $50 would be appreciated, but isn't necessary.
Please let me know your thoughts, criticisms. I, like Racer7, need a good kickstart for our machines.
