currently i have the following:

intel core 2 duo e7500 @ 2.93
nvidia geforce 9400 GT
4 gig ram

i play mostly old games like quakelive, urban terror.for games that came out just a few years ago i run 1024x768 and turn off effects ( skyrim runs just fine on lowest settings )

would upgrading the graphics card be worth it? if i do would the cpu be the bottleneck? what graphics card would you suggest?

i'm trying to squeeze out as much life from this rig as much as possible. thanks for your suggestions

That cpu is slow, but your current gpu is even slower. It should handle a 7750 level gpu relatively well.

Personally I wouldn't upgrade such an old rig, I'd just sell it and build something new

Upgrade to a newer, sub-$100 GPU and be happy.

OP, there' s a good deal for an open box 7790 1GB for $90.00.

While that's a pretty nice deal, I think I'd rather have a card with full warranty instead of only a 30 day return policy. E.g. MSI GTX 650 $90 ($80 AR) @ amazon, also on newegg for $100 ($80 AR). 3 year warranty (3 on parts, 2 on labor).

Or EVGA GTX 750 $107 AR AP, full 3 year warranty, very low power consumption. Basically same speed as the 7790, but the lower power and the warranty combined are definitely worth $17 to me
