Upgrading my XP 2400+... s754 3700+ or s939 3200+...

Im currently running a socket A Amd XP 2400+, 1 gb pc3200 ram, evga 6800 agp, wd 120gb hd...

my budget is between $200-$250.. Ive narrowed my choices down to a socket 754 3700+ with either a uli or nforce 3 250 motherboard...

or

socket 939 3200+ with ASrock motherboard...

I would like to keep my 6800 AGP because I don't think ive used it to its full potential...

i'm mainly using this pc to run battlefield 2... will I notice a drastic difference between my 2400+ now and upgrading to an Athlon 64 chip??

Any suggestions... btw won't be upgrading for another 3 years after this....

thanks in advance...

I think the 939 3200+ with ASrock motherboard is the best investment.Sell your 6800 AGP and get a PCI-E version.

I agree, although if he gets the ASRock board, he doesn't have to get rid of his AGP card...I think that's why he's looking at it in the first place.

ASRock still. Don't get socket 754 if you want it to last 2-3 years. The ASRock will last you all the way from the 3200+ to a dual-core socket 939 X2 to a socket-M chip later on, and also from that AGP card to a future PCI-E card, all without needing another mainboard upgrade.

The advantage of the combo I listed above is that with the money you save now, you can later buy a dual core and another motherboard later on. And you still have something powerful while you're waiting to upgrade. And that mobo has PCI-E.

How does that save money now? It costs more than the ASRock and the 3200+ combined, and it also forces him to immediately invest in a PCI-E graphics card, and then a whole new mainboard whenever he decides he wats to go to dual-core.

The ASRock is also PCI-E, it just supports both PCI-E and AGP graphics cards.

If that's the case, I'd go with the 3700 combination. People say, "but you won't be able to go dual core when you upgrade". 3 years is a long time. By then, the whole CPU environment may be so completely different that it negates that particular upgrade option.
