Upgrading my video...need advice-

Scarpozzi

Lifer
I'm looking at upgrading my video from the stock x300SE that came with my Dell Dimension 4700 with a GeForce 6800XT. The problem is that the spec on the card I want is suggesting a 450 watt power supply and my Dell only has a 305. I'm running a firewire card, 160GB SATA drive, Soundblaster Live, and video...that's it. Should I upgrade the video too or go ahead and see what happens without upgrading the video. I don't know what kind of current those things draw...

if you use the dell powersupply it will be choking the life out of your new videocard. (try breathing through a straw)

I recommend...

got this because it is really nice, and has more cables than you can shake a stick at!

get a nice power supply, and you can use it in any computer you buy for a long time.

You might purchase the card and anticipate that you will need a better powersupply...and see what it does.
you will notice if the card is choking...because its performance wont be very good compaired to the benchmarks you see other people getting.

Advisable not to buy just a cheapo 500W or something.... malfunctioning power supplies can fry components... and also they dont perform like they say they perform...there's alot more to it than wattage rating.

that fortron is rock solid, anyone on here will tell you, great bang for the buck.
