Currently I have a Xp 2500+ with 512MB pc3200 on an AGP / non SATA mobo.

For a while I was waiting to upgrade utnil SATA became more common, as well as PCIe.

Now that both are here and commonplace, I am thinking of doing a system upgrade. My main question is

a) with AMD, would adding PCIe (most likely with a 6600GT) and upgrading to a Athlon 64 really take me to the "next level" up? Or am I just upgrading an older system? Definitely can't afford FX, and I'm not obsessing about max frame rates for HL2, etc. Just trying to align myself with the next gen. technology over my old system.

b) would I be missing out on much with DDR2?

Your PC is perfectly fine for now. AMD is about to go through another major socket change, and you may want to wait up on that. Or you could try Intel, but you don't have to do that ;)

Pci-e does nothing for performance, just more future upgraidability. Your rig is fined except for your radeo 7000, I would recommend that you just buy an agp 6600gt right now, you'll see a huge performace improvment. By the way, DDR2 has worse performance, so your not missing out on anything.
