Upgrading my system, now concerned with power supply; need advice

Hi, I posted earlier about gradually upgrading my computer.

I've decided to take the advice I received on that thread, and went ahead and bought a 512 MB stick of 400DDR Kingston Value Ram from the link in the hot deals forum. Now, I am considering grabbing a Shuttle AN35N ultra mobo and a mobile Barton 2500+, as I've heard good things about both products.

Ideally, I want to be overclocking the CPU to 2400 or 2500 MHz, and will probably be picking up a better HSF combo to keep it cool. However, I am concerned that my current power supply might not be adequate for keeping a config like this stable; right now, I am using a (probably) generic "Enermax" 300W power supply that came with my (probably) generic case. Therefore, I'm wonding how important the power supply will be for running my potential rig, and would like any advice you could offer. Thanks again for the help, this forum is a great resource.

Also, let me know if you need any additional information to offer informed advice.

the power supply is very important if you plan on overclocking a mobile barton that high. you will need at least a good antec 430W psu. reason y i say antec is because they have a much stronger 5v rail, which is required for hte oc

Depends, if you would like to keep your PSU for a long time for next upgrade (and for R420, NV40) you would need a really powerfull 480W+, on the otherhand BTX standard might have appeared which could render the PSU useless for such a board. So if you're not going for the "Killar rig" and it's supposed to run in a small form factor cabinet I think I would get a good 350W PSU. Personally I have a Seasonic Super Tornado 400W, it's a bit more expensive than most but since it's the most efficient (lowest amount of watts wasted as heat) on the market it will save you money in the long run, and it also keeps the watts rock steady when full loaded. And then it's also really silent.

Enermax is actually a decent brand, I ran my rig off that same PS for a year so I say don't worry about it if you already have one, if your buying new though go with an antec truepower 400watt or better:D
