Hey all so I am looking to upgrade my PC within the next few months and I was looking for some tips. Here are my current specs.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHZ

GPU: Nvidia 7950GT 512MB

PSU: Enermax 500W (http://www.newegg.com/product/...?item=N82E16817194003)

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/product/...x?item=N82E16813127014

HDD: WD 250GB @ 7200RPM (http://www.newegg.com/product/...?item=N82E16822144701)

RAM: 2GB of Corsair Valueselect (http://www.newegg.com/product/...?item=N82E16820145098)

Case: http://www.newegg.com/product/...x?item=N82E16811133132

Anyways, I plan on using it to play some relatively high end games on high to max settings. I will be purchasing the new parts in the US, preferably off of newegg. My budget is somewhere around 300-400$.

I would rather not overclock, I would like it to be good enough for my needs without tweaking it too much as I am not THAT computer savvy although I can build it myself. I am not really a fanboy towards any specific brand but intel/nvidia seems to be doing well right now.

I would like to keep my mobo and possibly my CPU, while my RAM and GPU were the parts that I was thinking I would need to upgrade. I am currently running XP 32bit but I plan to upgrade to Vista64 as part of this purchase, do you guys suggest this or is XP still the better choice?

So what upgrades would you guys suggest that would maximize my computers performance in intense games that wouldnt break my budget?

Thanks for any and all help.

* Why are you married to the old 975 chipset? I'd get a newer P35 from Gigabyte.
* If you're not OCing, you'd get better performance out of the cheaper E4700.
* Your GPU is a power hog. Get an 8800GT and be happy.
* Alex St. John... "in many cases, silly security infrastructure and a lot of useless OS junk that impedes the real-time performance of games unnecessarily."

One more time I guess - best video card deal around - $170 AR. Only $10 more for a much better card overall seems like a really great deal unless you KNOW you'll be taking advantage of EVGA's step-up program. Especially if your plan is to

play some relatively high end games on high to max settings

the above card becomes just about the only choice really for a gamer on a budget. There are faster cards out there for a lot more money but price vs. performance this deal is the best one going right now.

And yes that link is for the full Vista HP w/SP1 integrated into the DVD already. Your choice of RAM is fine as well, GSkill is a popular pick around here.

Yeah, choices look good. Before you install Vista, try and get all the drivers you need on a USB drive, and make sure they're the Vista x64 digitall signed flavour. Saves hassle.

I'd keep the 2GB and XP 32-bit for another year or two. 2GB is fine for XP and so far there are no compelling Vista-only games. DirectX 10 "improvements" were almost all just intentionally weakening the DX9 version of a game to make DX10 seem better.

Buy that $170 8800GTS 512 and set aside the other $230 for a full upgrade some time next year.
