Upgrading my RAM

I have a Compaq Presario C712NR that is running on Windows Vista, 32 bit. System information lists that RAM capacity - 2GB, RAM slots - 2. Does this mean that I can only put a 1GB stick in each slot? Or can I put a 2GB stick in each slot?
Ive tried the manufacturer, but it says either 2GB or 4GB.
I am currently operating with a total of 1GB RAM.
Can anybody figure this out?

Every where I look it says 2 gig max, 1 gig per slot.

You could also use the tool on the crucial memory website, it will tell you how much you have, how many slots, how many are populated and with how much and also what your upgrade options are, in my experience it has been very reliable
