Upgrading my PIECE OF CRAP

I just bought a Nvidia tnt m64 16mb video card and 128mb pc100 ram for my celeron 600mhz ,64mb ram ,onboard video , windows 98 computer. i was wondering if it would make any improvements?and yes i know i have the worst computer ever but what would those two products do

That is defintely not the worst computer I have ever seen, by far. Now you will have a total of 192MB of PC100 which is just fine for Win98 (IMHO). The m64 was not a really good choice as a video card but it could be resold in our FS/FT. 🙂 By the way, does your motherboard have an AGP slot or just PCI? Also, how many memory banks?

Hmm.... well, as far as general usage (email, internet, word processing) you will probably notice a slight increase in performance, but not a whole lot...

If you're adding the 128mb stick and not replacing it, then that should give you a nice boost in performance as far as how much you can do. The video ram will help performance a bit, but it's still going to suck pretty badly with only 16mb of ram... you could get a 32 or 64mb card in that machine since you've got a 600mhz cpu.

All in all, I'd say save your money and buy/build a new system..... I mean, I built the one in my sig for just under $700.

You'll definately notice an increase in performance from the ram, probably a pretty significant one. The video card might give you better 2D quality for general usage stuff and will be much better for gaming.

Resell your video card... the M64 was basically like a GeForce MX from 1999 😉 . You can get PCI versions of the GeForce 4 MX which would actually give decent performance on games at least 1.5 or 2 years old, but still don't expect to be able to touch the newer titles. That platform (Celeron 600 and probably Intel 810 motherboard) is crippled by a 66MHz FSB so don't expect it to go too far. If you have somewhere near enough money to build a new system, consider saving up and selling the components in your current system.

I wouldn't have spent any more money on that... for $200 you can get a refurb computer from Tiger Direct or somethin that will be twice as fast.

Yeah, don't upgrade it any further. If you're on a tight budget, next time go for an XP 1700+ for under $50, with an nfroce2 mobo with integrated mx440 graphics and 512MB of ram probably under $250..
