upgrading my OS & secondary HD

my current rig (AMD 3500+, GeForce 6800, 3 gigs ram and 10k Raptor OS HD) is 7 years old on an original XP format and i dont mind it. ive cut back from gaming (no more DAoC or TFC) almost all together and only use the box for media and browsing for the time being (until Diablo III comes out probably), but my hard drives are beginning to get tight on space so i figured id do a small upgrade.

i currently have a Radeon HD AGP card (lol i know) that was given to me by a friend and a new Windows 7 disc waiting patiently for me to use, but i need new HDs before installing everything. what im looking at is the Intel X-25 80g as the OS HD and a WD Black Caviar 640g as my secondary. does that sound optimal or do i have better options as far as speed and quietness? i also have a 1.5t WD external as my media/backup drive.

would appreciate any input or advice. since my last build in 04 i have very little knowledge on whats good. thanks!

Sounds good to me. SSD for OS/apps and Caviar for storage is a good combination.

If you do end up gaming a lot with a specific game, putting it on the SSD (if you have space) may help with loading times, but probably isn't a big deal either way.

i guess my main concern is the secondary since im pretty dead set on the X-25. im looking for quiet and cool, but i dont want to sacrifice a lot of speed. then again, how much speed do i need for movies and music, you know? would i be better off veering away from the black series in this case? what about in the future when i plan to install some games on my PC? would the black be ideal to have then (dunno much about what youre supposed to put on the SSD yet)? im very picky 😱 bc i want this to last

Movies and music: no speed at all needed 😀

Gaming, I doubt you would really be able to tell the difference between most current 7200rpm drives, unless you got a stopwatch. The real difference would be to put you most played game on the SSD if you have space.

With an 80gig SSD, Win7 only takes about 10gig. Add another 10Gig for apps, and you still have a lot of space to add a game or two. just keep all music/movies/pictures on the spinning disk.
