I didn't know if this really fit into any particular topic on the main list, so "off topic" felt pretty safe. If you think I should post this somewhere else, let me know.
Ok I put together my current system around June of 1999. Its a good system and its never been reformated. However, watching DVD's on it kind of sucks, sound editing is ultra slow, and I am interested in installing a linux distribution on it. I'm going to reformat the whole thing, and install all the latest software on it... What I want to know to know is if I should do any mods to it, or buy new hardware. Realize I'm a college student and my soul means of income are my 9 piano students. So its not like I'm going to spend a lot of money, but I have some time right now, and would like to experiment with it.
Here is the current system:
OS: Windows 98 1st Edition 4.10.1998 (maybe I'll get XP)
CPU: Intel PIII 450 Retail, Intel Heatsink
Mobo: Asus P2B-F Revision 1.0 (I'm upgrading to the latest bios now)
RAM: PNY 128 Megs of PC 100 Ram (It says CAS 2, but I don't believe it)
Case: Addtronics 3890A (I think)
PS: Channel Well 250 Watt Model CWT-250 ATX
Video: Voodoo II 2000, Revision C
HD: Maxtor Diamond Max 10.2 Gig 7200 RPM
Sound: SBLive! Gold, Model CT4620 (you forgot they made these didn't you?)
NIC: 3COM 3C905TX
(no mods at all)
Main Computer Use:
Web Surfing
VC++
Sound Editing (slower than crap)
Mild Online Gaming (Not got into the new ones like EQ)
My questions are:
1) What components/mods should I change to get the most bang for my buck?
2) Is the best solution for adding a linux distribution to buy a second hard drive and dual boot?
3) What linux to get?
I *have* over clocked machines before and I do have some left over arctic silver. I've just never done it to my own and only on AMD processors (which I actually like better now..)
Keep in mind I'm both a musician (piano) and a computer scientist.
Thanks for your input!
Rob
