upgrading my laptop processor

I just bought a gateway platinum laptop (model mp6954) with a Core Duo T2050 processor. The chipset is Intel 945GM Express Chipset. I was wondering what processors I can upgrade to. Can I go to a Core 2 Duo Processor? Will going to say a 2.0Ghz processor have a big impact on battery life? Is my laptop designed for the processor I have? Will upgrading make more heat and not be good for my unit? Please and thank you this if my first post.
