Upgrading my dad's comp: Dell Dimension XPS233

Hi,

Currently, it's got a P2-233 and 192mb of ram running Win98se. It's irritating how it can't run 640x480 movie files smoothly and it seems to struggle profusely when opening ICQ or even IE.

Therefore, I wish to upgrade the processor to the max that the mobo can handle. I checked the Dell website and it implied the fastest processor supported was P2-333. Does anyone have any experience with this system? I really hope I can upgrade to at least a P2-450.

But, if worst case happens and nothing is upgraded, do you think that this P2-233 system with 192mb of ram can handle Win2k? And do you think it's better off with Win2k rather than Win98se?

It's only an i440LX mobo so the fastest PII you could get is 333 MHz, and that may not work for various reasons. Theoretically you can also go up to a Celeron 533 MHz, but that may not work too.

I have upgraded those before. What I did was go to intel website and download a bios that works with that Dell....I read about it in the forums at Dell's website. I flashed the board(the process is weird..unlike what people in here are used to).....and I installed a slotket and a Celeron 433mhz. I think it'll take up to Celeron 533mhz...not including the 533mhz version that is FC-PGA.
