Alright, smart people, i depend on you. Ok here's the deal.
I have a compaq presario 5190 and frankly, it sucks. Yes... that's the cold, harsh, undeniable truth. I can't upgrade it, it's a COMPAQ! It runs right now under an amd k6/2 400mhz chip. I'm planning on upgrading it, because i'm a gamer, and this computer does not suit my gaming needs.
Well, this is what I'm planning on doing. I'm planning to take out the hard drive (12gb), the zip drive (100mb), the dvd drive, the video card (geforce 2 mx), the sound card, and the ram stick [128mb sdram, that's what it says on the stick (DIMM)] and then put it in my new motherboard and case.
I only have $450. I need to buy the motherboard, the processor and the case, all of this under $450. I'm looking for an Amd T-Bird/Duron motherboard that is compatible with my Ram stick. I'm also looking for a duron processor, and a case. The reason why I'm looking for a T-Bird/Duron mobo, is because I will upgrade later to a T-Bird processor.
I guess my question is this, which mobo, which duron processor and which case should I get? Is my little experiment going to work? Am I missing something?

Thank you. Any help will be greatly, greatly appreciated!

actually, why get a duron now? t-bird is about to be obsolete anyways.
I would get
a case (im not an expert on them)
a asus a7v133 for 117 at newegg
a 1ghz 266fsb athlon oem for $125 ( might get up to 1.4 or so if your lucky and overclock)
and more ram

but basically $450 will go a long ways toward getting an athlon system

rogelio, the biggest problem I see with your plan is that it is likely the RAM used is PC66 or otherwise incompatible with later athlon boards. Plan on including RAM in your pricing, but these days that is rather cheap.

Thanks Dutchboy and Dameon, I really appreciate your help, I will consider both of your opinions. Thanks.

I don't know about that ram, I have a 5150 and it has PC100 in it.

rogelio1, what kinda of power supply does your compaq have? As I said I have a compaq 5150 and it has a power supply with three connectors to the mothebroard. My PS is dead I think, so i would love to get my hands on yours if it's the same type. LMK

By the way I would enable your PM's in profile, it is a lot easier to communicate.

How many pins on the power connectors to the mobo? It is probably a AT Powersupply in that Compaq.

Not exactly AT. Compaq uses some funky powersupplies. Has to be replaced with a Compaq PS.

Damn, it takes balls to admit you own a Compaq. :)

<< Some Presarios use basic AT PS's. >>

Hmm, sorry, All of them that i've worked on had the funky ones. I worked on a couple of those 5000 series ones, that's why I asumed these would be the same.

The 5190 sucked in just about every respect
Every new presario 5000, 7000, 5Wwhatever, now use standard ATX

Yes it does take balls to admit owning a compaq, thats why i give credit to rogelio1
, especially for trying to make his better.
As for mine it was given to me by my father when it quit working. I am pretty sure it is an ATX PS, It is just one of those funny ones from compaq. It has 2 connectors for the normal power(5v, 12V0 and one connector for the 3.3v

rogelio, is this the type of PS you have, if so I am very interested,
