Upgrading my Celeron 366@550...I'm thinking 1 GhZ Celeron?

If you've read my other post, I'm upgrading my 550 in a BX6.2 mobo, and I've decided on a Celeron processor with a MSI 6905 Adapter (I have a 6101 adapter currently).

Should I buy a lower speed Celeron and OC it? Or should I just pay 80 bux for a stock speed 1 ghz cpu (anandtech CPU price list)?

Money is kinda tight.

Thanks

Unfortunatley, The price/performanace ratio will be very low since the bus speed is still 100. When I went from 336@550 to 566@850, I was vey dissapointed. I payed 100 bux for no noticeable difference.

Save your $70 and look towards a $200 mobo/cpu swap.

BTW, Old intel chips are ridiculouslyl overpriced. Their 850hz PIII cost 113 bux. For the same money I can get an XP1600. Same goes for celerons as well.

If your tight on money think about this.

Epox KH8A+: $70
Duron 1Ghz : $40
128MB DDR : $30
-------------------------
Final price : $140

Overclock the duron to 133 FSB and I guarantee youll notice the difference. It'll be worth breaking your piggy bank.

you may be able to get 133fsb on that 100fsb 1GHz celeron if you're lucky but remember your videocard & ram have to be up to the job! :)

When I upgraded my cely 300a@450 to a 1gig retail cely, my Q2 scores went from 77 fps to 142 fps on my V5 5500. I know this is an old benchmark but it gives you a little idea what the cpu could do. This is also on a Bx6r2 mb. I know it would have probably been smarter to sell the mb/cpu combo and get a mb/duron deal, but where I live there aren't any Fry's and no one online has the same deals. Also, I just didn't feel like having to reinstall windows from scratch like you should with a new mb installation.

After I let it burn in a while, I'll try overclocking this and see what I get.

Word to THAT, my brudda !! I remember my last reinstall VERY clearly. It took well over a week to get everything loaded, and even then, nothing felt quite right. We are talking about EVERY SINGLE SETTING in EVERY SINGLE GAME , right down to the mouse sensitivity. I'm not looking forward to it again, especially since I spend 8 hours a day at work doing this stuff already. I'm even bold enough to try and delete the ENUM registry key and see if I can let Windows redetect everything on a new board, as long as I have all my drivers on a CD-RW.

BTW, I agree with ShinSa, ... but if $$ is too tight to fit that in your budget, then go the Celeron route and hope for a comfy O/C to tide you over til prices sink into affordable range.

Well, I don't play games, so I won't be tweaking that much. I'm gonna install Windows 2K, so installing isnt that much of a pain rather than time.

I have two sticks of Crucial PC133 ram and 1 stick of Micron PC100, which i can dump into another machine. Now, if my Xpert 128 or new video card can handle it....

If your going to be doing an install of W2000 anyways and don't mind the work in sellling your old mb/cpu, then buying an inexpensive mb/duron setup would be my recommendation. That way you have an upgrade path into the future while the BX is about played out. I'm sure this will be my last upgrade for my bx. I wouldn't have upgraded the cpu but I bought a V5 5500 and thought the card deserved a cpu worthy of it's abilities. There is one older game I like to play that runs great on glide but craps out on my GF2 (main computer) so I wanted to find a V5, otherwise the cely 450 did everything else I needed it to do quite respectably.

Doesn't the Duron use DDR? That was the only thing I was concerned with. Or, can I still use my PC133 RAM?

axelfox - if I were you I'd go for a 800-ish Celeron. Run it on 133fsb for 1GHz+. I tried exactly that with a Celeron-900, and it could just about do it with a massive V-core hike. I reckon you'd stand a much better chance with a lower spec chip, like the 800.

Or just save the pennies for a nice new AMD rig. There's a few decent mobos (EPoX's EP-8KHAL, anyone?) out there for ridiculously little money, and the chips are cheaper then Intel's.
