Upgrading motherboards with Win2000

I'm looking at pricing a possible upgrade for a P4 1.6GHz system with a 400fsb i845 chipset motherboard to maybe a new Celeron D or a used P4 ~2.6ghz. To do that I'd more than likely need a motherboard upgrade, probably to an i865 board. Is swapping boards hard in Win2000?

If this were WinXP, I'd just do a repair install after swapping boards, but I know from experience that doesn't correct inaccessable boot device errors in Win2000.

So I'd like to get a feel if I can do a full upgrade, or if I'm just stuck looking for a hard to find high clock speed 400fsb chip for cheap?

Thanks

You could try the trick used on Win98 when the change is a massive one. On the last run with the old hardware, REMOVE all of the "devices" from the device manager that are associated with the old hardware.

I know I can uninstall old drivers - but that doesn't always work, and I'm not sure exactly how often that doesn't work in Win2000, and if there is any backup plan for such an occasion. WinXP has the repair install that is a backup plan that works very well, but Win2000 repair install doesn't always fix these types of problems.

Just change your IDE controllers from their custom driver to the standard IDE driver. W2K might complain about the generic driver being a poor choice, but screw that, full speed ahead ! Now shut down the PC and swap out the boards. Once its booted up you can add the new drivers for the new board and off you go. To help yourself out in case of a jam, copy the relevant new driver(s) from the CD to the hard drive before making the swap. That covers your arse in case the IDE channels are not detected before you need the driver CD.
I have done this particular swap maybe 6+ times so far, and W2K is just peachy with it each and every time.
