Upgrading Motherboard

Hello folks,

I have a Dell 8100 that I would like to upgrade. By upgrade, I mean take the motherboard and CPU and replace both. I want to re-use my hard disks, CD\DVD and Graphics card as they are all fairly new. The processor is a P4 1.3Mhz. None of the drives are SCSI - they are ATA or IDE. Anyway, can I buy any CPU/RAM/Motherboard and will it fit in my Dell case? The case is a Dell Tower. What about the power supply?

Thanks, Bill

the case is a tower? so it's a desktop? If so, you can replace it with a mobo of the same size (ATX, mATX, etc), or with one that is a smaller size, usually. Unless of course, dell chose to use a non-standard mobo

Non-standard MOBO? Please tell me they would not do that......

Here are the specs. Can you figure out what size MOBO I have:

Will G,

I believe you are right. Like I said I want to replace my motherboard. I just want to make sure that the new motherboard will fit in the Dell 8100 case. I guess I could get a new case but why do that when I have a case.

Thanks, Bill

Ya it should just make sure you have enough power connecters and such for the mobo you choose and vid cards and such. As your older dell prob doesn't have some of the newer type connecters.

Will G.

Chances are your Dell case uses proprietry connectors rather than the standard ATX ones, so you cant install any other mobo. To save a lot of trouble, its probably cheaper and easier to buy a new standartd ATX case and PSU and transfer your stuff over to that, then sell the Dell barebones on AT or Ebay.

It does have an odd layout to the board but by the looks of things i can't see that they arn't in fact standard stuff..
