I am currently looking at two monitors....

HF-289HJB 28" Widescreen HD LCD
http://microcenter.com/single_produc...uct_id=0306940

and

Acer B273HU bmidhz Black 27" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009165

I am not sure if it's worth the extra money to get the 2048 x 1152 resolution. This is not a standard res, is it?

I noticed there is a new samsung 22" out with that res, but the monitor is kind of small.

Any opinions? My monitor now only supports 1680 res, and if I spend money on a new monitor, I am thinking I will see more value for my money with a bigger size.

I'd not get an 28" 'cause they have a TN panel.
I'd rather get a 24 inch for gaming or maybe a 26".

You have absolutely no more space on them, just bigger pixels, wich leads to more aliasing and you'll see the disadvantages of an LCD panel more than you'd with smaller pixels.

As for the resolution, there is no difference between 16:10 screens with 24", 26" or even 28"!
So you gain nothing but bigger pixels...

No more space on a 28" over a 24 or 26" eh? Interesting.

in physical measurements there is more space, but sometimes they may have the same resolution/desktop real estate, which also leads to bigger pixels.

He's right. All 3 sizes have the same resolution of 1920x1200. So by getting a bigger one, all you get is bigger pixels with the same area for usage.

If I were to upgrade, I'd go with a nice 24" Dell (like the sweet U2410). The move TN->IPS is worth it alone. Add higher resolution and it's great. I would not bother with a TN screen ever again (and I'm using one every day btw - Samsung 245B+). So my advice: either get a quality 24" IPS or PVA screen or don't bother with the upgrade.

If you want to go crazy, grab a 30" Dell :p It's the only sensible jump from 24" as it offers a higher resolution (2560x1600).

I noticed a Dell at Best Buy....but it is not the model you mentioned above. I will only be doing PC games and watching occasional movies on the computer with the monitor. The Xbox and Blu Ray are on the HDTV upstairs.

The monitor I currently have is an HP W2207

TN is fine for you. Don't fall for the IPS Nazis' hype. With that over with,
they're right about getting a 28" or 27". At the same resolution of 1900x1200, all you get from a larger monitor is larger pixels, which means less sharp stuff.

I'd just get a 24" 1900x1200 monitor. Same resolution, but smaller pixels as to not make things blurry.

because you know better than to ask that question, judging by your rig in your sig.

I am really curious. The OP never mention games or what he will do with the new monitor. Why was the poster being negative on his video card?

You're only assume that after he replied to your post that he will buy a 5850. Before then, all the OP asked was between the 2 monitors he's thinking of buying. I have a GTX 275 and I am not a gamer. btw, I am not trying to bust your chop, just curious why you saw his video card in the sig and assume he need a new one.

Easy to assume most people are gamers when they overclock there video card because its a massive bottlneck with his core i5 cpu..
And a 8800gts 640 will not game well with a 1080p monitor.

why not just get a 32" - 42" TV? Price wise I've seen LCD and plasma 1080p displays between 300-500 recently so it's probably in your budget. They may be too big for your needs, but otherwise the quality on a TV is usually better than a budget panel since the wider viewing angle requirements exclude a lot of TN panels.
Of course if money was no object I'd get a 30" dell or apple for the 2560 x 1600 resolution and IPS panel, but otherwise TVs make pretty nice displays. Other bonuses are they have a built in tuner, usually more connection options (excluding DVI), better speakers, more settings usually like backlight control, and sometimes bonus features like streaming (probably not in the sub 500 level though). Biggest con is probably the warranty since most are only 1 year while many monitors do 3 years.

Saw a nice HP 25" and a nice Acer 24" at microcenter today. Might come down to either one of those.
