All I do is game, chat on forums, research on the internet, and very occasinally watch movies. Gaming is 90% of what I do though, and I've heard that CRT's are generally better for that. I like the space saving LCD's provide and the widescreen options. Money isn't a factor here, but I'm not going to go for any LCD larger than 20". (I just see that as a sweet spot for gaming, not too demanding in size, and IQ with 1680 x 1050 is just as nice as higher resolutions with less IQ IMO). I know that CRT's can do higher resolutions for thier screen size, but I've basically came down to the conclusion between two choices.

The NEC 20WGX2 or the best CRT around. Which is better?

These days the "best CRT around" is probably a used CRT that was the best around 4 years ago. It seems there are fewer and fewer decent options available for CRTs these days. You probably already know that htough...:p

i LOVE my 20" trinitron CRT. u can find em on the cheap and the image quality is amazing. honestly i have yet to find a LCD that i would be happy with as a replacement for my good ol trinitron. when that day comes i might replace it but as of now there is nothing. and i have friends that have all kinds of LCD's lol. ive tried the apple 30" display, the dell 2405/7 the nec 30" display. honestly if im gonna get a monitor that big i will just go and plug my computer up to my 52" plasma and say fvck u guys im goin home :) so in conclusion find a sony trinitron or one of the old Sony fp(bunch o numbers) that were rated the best monitor of all time and ranked the #1 CRT for like 8 yrs in a row.

I know the trinitrons are amazing, but how do they compare to the NEC 20WGX2? I guess, I'm really wondering if there are any reviews comparing the two, or if someone has had/has both.

Can you guys still buy new trinitrons? I can't find any NEW CRTs for sale that aren't shadowmask ones. And buying and shipping a used CRT monitor is kind of unappealing to me. Although there are a few used monitor vendors that people like.

I don't know? I'm just really wondering if the NEC 20WGX2 is a better gaming monior than any CRT.

Manufacture of new Trinitron/Diamondtron/AG CRTs has stopped a while ago (except Iiyama may be selling some, I'm not sure).

Here you can compare the Mitsubishi DiamondPro 930SB (AG) to the NEC 20WGX2. Even though the NEC's motion ever-so-slightly lags behind, those are on the worst case scenarios (select different tests under Etape 3). I'd take the NEC because of the form factor, text clarity, and easiness on my eyes (during hours of gaming). Bright colors will also be more vibrant because they have a higher brightness level on the NEC. Pictures of it in action: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1043429&page=1&pp=20

The 20WMGX2 looks like it's on par with the top CRTs in many ways, at least for daytime usage. It's rather limited in its resolution though when you compare it to those. It would be nice if NEC at least comes out with a larger 19x12 version.

However, if you want one of the good CRTs your only option is to buy a used one off ebay or something. I would probably take the 20WMGX2 just because of that. Used and refurbed CRTs are especially prone to problems, despite the great deals you can get on ebay.

Here's a link to checkout. Good viewing.

I love the resolutions and pixel densities on some of those. It's too bad they're grayscale only.
