Im upgrading my ak31 kt266 to a soltek kt266a and i was wondering if its recomended if i should format my hd or not.

Sorry if this questions been asked before and i didnt see it.

for best results ..yes, but after you backup your config/data give it a try there really is not much to lose by giving it a go if it falls flat ...format

You don't have to format unless you want to change from FAT 32 to NTFS or partition sizes.
either delete your windows directory or reinstall into another directory and delete the old windows directory after.
Reformating means you have to move all the data around etc where just reinstalling means you have put your programs back in again but you get rid of a lot of dead fonts dll's etc.

I would. I've attempted mobo changes without reformating, and it wasn't pretty, even when the chipset was basically the same. (BX to BX)
