I'd recommend a full reinstallation of Windows98. Here's one easy way to do it:

  • Go into the BIOS and set the first boot device to CDROM
  • Put the Win98 CD-ROM into the drive and reboot
  • When the system boots from the CD, tell it to Start computer with CD-ROM support and wait for the A:\ prompt
  • Now type d: and then cd win98
  • Type format c: /s and wait for the hard drive to finish formatting
  • Type c: and then md win98 to create a win98 directory on c:
  • Type d: and you should be at d:\win98
  • Type copy *.* c:\win98 to copy all the Win98 setup files from d:\win98 to c:\win98
  • Type c: and then cd win98
  • Type setup and Windows98 will begin Setup from the hard drive.

This puts all the setup files in c:\win98, which is handy because you never have to find your Win98 CD when you're adjusting networking settings or installing drivers. :D

I hope you have a good-quality power supply in your plans, since the PSU that comes with a typical P2 350 system is going to be skimpy for an Athlon system. I'd shoot for a PSU with a 3.3V + 5V rating of around 220W, which is most companies' 300W-350W units, so you've got some surplus power and the PSU doesn't have to strain itself.
