After a slew of random controller errors that happened when I was burning discs and once while I was gaming (1. had to unplug my SATA DVDRW from the board due to a controller error on \Device\CdRom0, which made the system stable again until 2. alternating events of parity error was detected on \Device\Scsi\nvgts1 and driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D that just happened out of the blue while I was playing D3 and there was a lag followed by a crash to desktop), I have decided to just pick a new motherboard and somewhat start from scratch.
While controller errors may be the common denominator (suggesting that the board is at fault), I am not overlooking the fact that these errors started after I replaced my 500gb hdd with a 1 tb and my GTS250 with a GTX560 2 months ago. Since it's a new drive, I did a fresh format, so the lingering registry entries/profiles/old drivers thing is a non-issue. Of course I may just need to reset the CMOS, but there's the possibility that my system logs will have those nasty red symbols sometime in the future.
Anyway, I have narrowed down my choices to MSI and Gigabyte. MSI because I've been using MSI for almost 13 yrs and this is the only time I've had a problem with it (and that was due to upgrades). Gigabyte because, apart from the reasonable price, I am willing to venture to "unknown territory" with another reputable brand. And this time, I'll be using a non-Nforce chipset...
Choices:
1. MSI A75MA-G55 - looks appealing on paper
2. MSI A75MA-P35 or MSI A55M-P35 - cheaper than #1, but lacks the "Military Grade Components" and Crossfire to name a few, but I can live with that
3. Gigabyte 880GM-D2H - looks good as well, although I recall reading parity errors or some errors with 880s and 770s (or something like that.. involves removing the sata drive and replacing it with a slower IDE one to remain stable).. not even sure if it's MSI or Giga
The components I'll be including:
- Athlon II X3 445 (Rana)
- 1 Tb Seagate Barracuda Sata3 (and possibly an additional 500gb)
- Corsair TX 750 (1st gen)
- 4 case fans
- 1 optical drive (Sata, unless otherwise suggested)
- Audigy 2
- GTX 560
- Corsair 4gb RAM
- the OS will still be XP SP3 for this one
Additional questions:
1. Having an ATI/AMD chipset, will my GPU cause conflicts/problems/errors with any of them?
2. Choices 1 and 2 only listed Llanos as compatible CPUs. I assume they are backward compatible with my cpu?
Thanks! And please choose among these mobos only.
