Upgrading memory on Dell/Warranty ramifications?

Dell desktop memory costs $300 for the same 1024mb that would cost $120 at Crucial.

I don't want to void the warranty on a machine I plan on buying. Does anyone know if aftermarket memory upgrades will affect warranty?

So should I just get the least amount of ram via Dell - then upgrade from crucial?

it doesn't void the warranty. if the memory fries the mobo, just leave that out of the tech support phone call.

We buy memory from crucial all the time for the systems at work. only once did it fry a board, and it was replaced under warranty with no hassle.

We all do that. If you call them about a problem and you tell them about the memory, then they will ask you to remove the memory and try your computer again. If you still have the problem, you call back and they will continue on as if you never bought outside memory. That is the only difference - you must call twice.

I was wondering the same thing but with different components. What if for example: you purchased a Dell 4500 with lowest configuration and once you received the computer you swapped out VGA, HD, Memory, ect. Are you still under Dell's warranty if you don't have those original parts that came with the system? Has any been in this situation before?

HD and RAM should be no problem. by VGA if you mean the LCD or the video card, Dell may have a problem with that.

Dell is quite easy to deal with, my roommate had a dell motherboard die in the last couple months of the warranty.

He's had countless DIMMS, video cards, IDE controllers, etc, etc, etc in & out of that box & they had no problem sending us a motherboard. They even waited on the phone while we swapped CPU's to make sure it wasn't the CPU. They had no problem with us doing the board swap either.
