My buddy asked me for help upgrading the RAM in his Sony Vaio laptop. I've never done that before, so I have no idea how difficult (or not) it is. Is there anything I should know before hand? Any web guides you can point me to that explain how to do it?

Also, according to Crucial's website, this Vaio model requires the following RAM:

SDRAM, PC100 ? CL=2 ? Non-parity ? 100MHz ? 3.3V ? 32Meg x 64

Crucial lists their 256 MB modules for $110. Is that about what he should expect to pay? Any better deals out there?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Manuals are your friend.

Installation steps depend on the laptop model. Could be as easy as one screw or something much more complicated like removing the keyboard. The manual will tell you.

SO-Dimms are always more expensive. PC100 is getting more rare, so you can expect to pay more. I'd go look and see if kingston has any memory for that compter. They also have a similar compatibility web site.

Often, replacing or adding ram to a laptop is just a little plastic door under the laptop, but as he said above, it could be elsewhere so ... RTFM.

Also, laptops are often shipped with 2 SO-Dimm slots, which are both populated. You might have to remove one of the dimms. Keep this in mind. You might just end up with 384MB instead of 512MB. That is often a disapointment.

Good luck!
