Hi, long time member, trying to make things work a bit better due to my roku and apple tv.

According to my specs I have 2gbs of Corsair XMS2 DDR2. Im running on an older Gigabyte GA-P35. According to what ive seen it can support DDR3 if need be, since thats most of what i find anyway.

Im trying to add a 4gb stick or (2x2) The questions is what is my better option? Run the new DD3 4gb by itself, or somehow combine it with the ddr2, which im assuming woudl make the ddr3 drop to ddr2 speeds but would it work better as 6gbs? I know about dual channeling which is how im running it now, but what i get into issues like that forgive me for not knowing exactly what the outcome woudl be. Trying to find a good price option on a 4gb.

UPDATE: After doing so more diggin it looks like the ddr3is keyed differrently so it wouldnt fit at all? So now im back to sticking with ddr2.. shoot, so just add more i guess? Do I need to stick with DDR2 1066?

Thanks for your help!!!

The DDR3 ram isn't even going to fit in the slot.

So you might have to shell out a little extra to go with more DDR2 sticks.

As for the speed differences, first off, the differences between these RAM MHz results in infinitesimally small gains.. and it'll just revert to the slowest of the different speeds.. not a big deal though, its the amount of RAM that matters most for you here..

Going above 2gb RAM here is going to add a TON of breathing room. You're making the right move. Even if you just doubled it, you'd be good

Some Gigabyte P35 MBs have both DDR2 and DDR3 slots and support.
But one one type of memory can be run at a time.

No Mix & Match for you!

Thank you thelastjuju,
So ive seen some online and localy that are 800 but if I get higher it will just revert to 800 or whatever my mobo supoprts. So great ill just make sure i have more ram and not be concerned about not using ddr3 since i cant. Im trying to make my apple tv and roku w/plex streaming better. Its good now, but I have a feeling that my lack of ram is affecting my performance.

Thank you!
