In AnandTech's article "Apple's Mac Pro - Upgrading CPUs...", the crew proved that it was possible to upgrade the Mac Pro's CPUs from two dual-core Woodcrest chips to two quad-core Clovertown chips (pre-production, of course). Looking at the specs of the new octo-core Harpertown Mac Pro, Intel's documentation for the chipset (1333 and 1600 FSBs are both supported), and the pin compatibility of these three chips (Woodcrest/Clovertown/Harpertown), I see no reason why a pair of Harpertown's couldn't be dropped into the older Mac Pro.

Trying to provide some clarity for my Mac Pro upgrade path. Anyone have feeback on the technical feasibility of this?

Anandtech, any chance of getting the crew to give this upgrade a shot? Thanks.
