Upgrading Laptop HDD

olds

Elite Member
I am truly ignorant when it comes to laptops (among many things) and want to upgrade to a larger capacity hdd.
I have an older Compaq 14XL345.
How do I determine what size/form factor/? I need?
TIA

It should be in your manual/user guide. The maximum size is determined by your laptop's BIOS. What size is currently in it? I think it can handle 20 GB OK.

Check this: Link

6 GB
EDIT
I meant size as in what will fit in it? Is there only one size of laptop hdd?

OK - I saw it stock with a 10 GB, and found a reference for upgrading to a 20.

I bought it used off the FS/T forum. I've maxed out the RAM, added a wireless card and upgraded from ME to XP Pro. It works great but I need more storage. I mainly use it to surf from the couch and I take it when I have to travel out of town.

Chris.... you are looking for a 2.5" (9.5mm) drive for your Compaq. Looks like you can go up to 20GB. Glad to see you like it.

Thanks, it works great for what I want it to do.

All correct - laptop 2.5" drives come in basically two thicknesses - 9.5mm and 12mm. Either one should work.
