Upgrading internals of Dell

In an earlier post I was thinking of getting a dell system for parents and upgrading some of the guts (CPU, RAM, GFX). In doing so, will I void the warranty on the machine?

It depends on what parts you upgrade. Dell has a manual on safe parts you can upgrade without voiding the warranty. Be aware that dell will only service the parts that you purchased from them. Any 3rd party parts are not serviced by Dell.

Why bother doing things like upgrade the CPU? RAM and GPU I would understand, but the CPU? Especially if you are planning on doing it right out the gate, you are just wasting money. The cost difference between CPU and CPU+ on Dell's website is usually significantly less than the the cost of CPU+.

As for the GPU, unless they have changed in the past 3 years or so (haven't cracked open a dell newer than that) then you want to at least get an entry level discrete card otherwise you won't get a PCIe x16 (physical or electrical) slot.

CPU was a maybe, but the ram and gpu are a definite. The problem is that getting a basic discrete card costs more than getting a seperate card.

So you're going to buy a pc and then upgrade basically half the pc right away??

It own't void your warranty on parts that came from Dell. If it's idenfified that your added parts are CAUSING the problem, then Dell won't be able to help.

That list means that Dell will send PARTS ONLY when repair of certain items is necessary on certain Dell Business computers and servers. Dell won't send out a repair person for something that's on their "self-replaceable parts" list.
