Upgrading Intel CPU

I currently have a Dell 8400 with a 3.2ghz 540 intel proc. I was wondering if I wanted to let's say next year upgrade to the 3.8ghz model, can I buy a retail box 3.8ghz chip and just replace the current chip?

I don't see why not, providing the BIOS is upgraded to recognize faster LGA775 chips.

my friend has a Dell and he took of the reason to look at the chip for some reason :roll: and Dell voided his warranty. So as long as you are fine with not having a warranty that should work.

I wouldn't recommend replacing a CPU on a OEM machine.

Damn, I shoulda got the AMD 64. But Dell enticed me with that damn 30% coupon and the 2005FPW for $480 upgrade......
