Now:

2500+ barton @ 1.8ghz (stock)
1GB pc3200 DDR
X800xl @ 408/526
OS drive: 250GB Maxtor
then:

around 3900 3dmarks

then:

A64 3000+
1GB pc3200 DDR
X800xl @ 408/526
OS drive: 250GB Maxtor

I realize that the main benefit will consist of FINALLY being able to play my HD files (in TS and in h.264:D) but I wanted to see what type of benefits I can get in gaming...

gaming wont really be much different unless you OC the 3000+ (they can get up to 2.4GHz easily) or wait for 64bit games, which could take a long time

It will really depend on what resolution you're running at, what games, etc. If you were CPU limited before, you're going to see a big increase in performance, but if you were GPU limited in your settings before, the difference wont be huge.

It is a 3000+ "newcastle" CPU and a SOLTEK SL-K8AN-RL mobo

It was not bought with overclocking in mind so I'll have to research it..wish me luck:(

Upgrading in a few minutes = ordering, or putting in the parts?

Putting in parts. It used to be a video editing machine but it was overkill so I am shifting it to gaming/htpc use:D

I went from a 2500XP to a 3200+ Winchester and I did not notice that much of an increase in performance.

ur wrong, you will see a difference in fps.

this is why your wrong:
the AMD64 processor can simataneously run 32bit apps. He doesnt have to oc it nor does He have to wait for 64bit games. There is already some such as farcry 64bit which, actually did worse in benchmarks.

I'm about to upgrade from a p4 2.8 ghz to a amd 4000+, also getting 2 gigs of ram from 1, and a raptor drive from 2 small raid 0 drives. I'm keeping my AGP 6800 gt though. How much of a performance increase should I be expecting?
