A friend of mine has an old hp pavilion that he uses for only mp3s and maybe movies(has 160G external). I have seen 1 Ghz slot 1 processors for sale. What is the fastest I could put in? I have an Athlon and dont know too much about these older pentiums + I thought there would be more problems because it is a crap computer to begin with. Any help would be appreciated.

How about providing a Model for the HP?...

I had a similar computer, and i just bought a slocket and a celeron 850, worked like a charm..only cost about $25

The absolute most you can do is a PowerLeap slotket + 1.4Ghz Tualatin Celeron.

Otherwise, I'd say it would max around a P3-600Mhz (Katmai), depending on model.

You can get 1Ghz Slot 1 CPUs but they are expensive, especially the 100 Mhz bus one. I have one of them in my old machine that I purchased when they hit a low price of like $130. Now they are up to about $270+

If it's a BX board it might support up to 1Ghz PIIIs but you would need a BIOS update from HP if they have one to do it.

A cheaper alternative would be am Upgradeware Slot T (Link) and a Tualatin-based Celeron processor.

Those dont have an onboard VRM.

You may or may not need it, but thats why the PowerLeap sells for more and is compatible with more systems.

The Slot T DOES have a built-in VRM, which converts the voltage from standard 2.0v to the Tualatin CPU's voltage. Probably what you meant is an actual power supply/VRM combo, which the Powerleap has. Older boards with a lower capacity power supply may need it, but unless you OC, the majority of BX boards can actually handle it. Another plus of the Slot-T is that it can pass voltage/temp readings of the CPU to the mobo, something the Powerleap cannot.

Yeah, I believe that a BIOS update or if it has been updated and you use the correct processor. I'm running a BX Intel board that started out with a Slot 1 PII-400 and now has a slocket with a 1 gig Celeron. On this mobo it has to be a P100 frontside bus to keep from causing probs with the video cards etc.

HP isn't very good about building much extra into their bios's. This may limit the system from recognizing any kind of speedier processor. The katmai 600 may be the limit, but anything is possible. Does powerleap's supported systems page say anything about hp's of that vintage?

It does limit the BIOS on what kind of CPU it can identify on boot-up ( an Intel borad I had before said it had a Pentium Pro 350 when I plug in a 1.2ghz Celeron with either Slot-T or Powerleap adapter) but it doesn't mean it won't work normally. Windows still recognizes the correct CPU and whole system runs at the CPU's normal speed.

about 2 years ago it mgiht have been worth it to bother buying a slot cpu to upgrade it, but now... its not worth bothering with at all. back then i upgraded some asus m/b from p2 400 to slocket t + celeron 1.1@ 1.5ghz. for about 60 bux. but thats with a decent motherboard in the first place, and a bit of elbow grease. with a prebuilt hp m/mb and questionable bios support, thats just a nightmare. esp considering now for 69 bux u can generally go to frys and get their low end cpu motherboard combo and it will blow any celeron slot upgrade u could get. generally u can get a 2000xp amd processor and ecs m/b i think for 70 bux at frys. shove it in the case.. and if ur lucky, its still the m/b can take both ddr or pc133 or wahtever if u want to reuse ram. to boot you get usb 2.0 ports, agp 8x, etc. past a certain point in time, trying to upgrade an old computer gets very little for your money

In all seriousness, I would probably try to look around the for sale forums. You find alot of stuff there. You might even be able to sell that piece and get a slightly more workable piece. If you know what I mean
