Upgrading HD on Compaq X1000 series laptop

Hi:

Just wonder if I can update the HD of the Presario X1000 series laptop. The HD seems rather small when I took it out and I wonder if the 7200 rpm would the exact same size of the slot? Are all laptop HD universal in size and I have to buy the exact same size for the Presario X1000 series laptop? Thanks.

Yes, the 7,200 RPM should be the same size. You need a 2.5" standard "Notebook" hard drive. Like this one:

IBM Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 60GB ATA-6 2.5in 7200RPM Mobile Hard Drive

There are smaller drives such as used in the Sony TR series, but those are only for ultraportables.

There's a lot of good upgrade info on this forum, but I think you have to register to read the upgrade section:

Thanks very much for your help manko, yes my X1000 laptop is not ultraportable it's around 6 lbs =P So I guess the 7200rpm drive you suggested should fit into the laptop. Is there any good store you can suggest so that I can purchase the drive and try it out if it works? Do you think any store like Frys or CompUSA would carry them since I would like to buy from a store that let me return if the drive conflicts with my laptop. To the end it's a $190 investment and I don't want to get stuck with something that doesn't work for my laptop! =)

I will definitely check out the form thanks!
