Upgrading hardware in XP

I'm rebuilding my comp, going from an old Athlon 1.33 to an A64.
I'll be keeping the HD with the OS on it and the sound card. So with a new mobo/cpu/vid card/memory, how is XP going to react? Are my drivers going to be a mess, or will XP fix that issue for me.
I recall something about 3 hardware changes and you need to call MS with the key code or something....?

It's really too early for me to think clearly, so any advice/comments would be appreciated.

I depends on the chip sets used on the motherboards. Generally, going from one brand to another necessitates a reinstall. You might get lucky if both are the same brand, but given the gap between generations it is more likely that you will have to reinstall.

It is going to be a different brand (ECS to Chaintech).
So, I am going to need to backup all my stuff? Would I be better off just buying a new HD and then trying to grab everything off of the old one (pics/programs, etc.)?

The easiest and fastest way to do this is to swap the parts and then do a repair install from the xp cd. Save your data first but your system should stay intact with all progs working. Then update all necessary drivers. You will probably have to reactivate with ms.
Ideally, a clean install would be best.

You will indeed need to call MS with the key. Just a month ago after swapping my video card 5 times (9800NP, 9800SE, 9800 Pro, X800 Pro, 9800 Pro), I got the message that my hardware had changed (at start up) and I need to call🙁 I was very upset about this to say the least:| I bought the damn Win XP legit, and I still end up calling these fvcksticks at MS:roll: Just thinking about it is getting me upset again....

Try and get the same brand chipset, if your xp has a via chipset go with via for the 64, if the xp is nforce go with nforce for the 64. If you do end up getting a new hard disk just install windows on the new disk, hoot your old disk up as a slave and drag n drop the files you need to save.

as you stated,i would buy another HD to load and have the other to use to transfer files and settings from,HD are cheap now
