Upgrading hard drive in PS3

I have a full 80GB hard drive. I'm interested in copying it to a new larger drive.

What's the best way? A service, or do it yourself? I have an extra 1TB drive, use that?

Do it yourself. It's super easy. You just need an external USB drive to temporarily dump your existing data to. I upgraded my launch 60GB PS3 to a 500GB drive.

concur. It is ridiculously easy, there are all kinds of how-to's online. The only mildly tricky part as I recall is the copy disc needs to be FAT32

Thanks. I remember reading about 'protected data' on the hard drive and am not sure about how to copy the drive, I'll take a look.

any noticeable difference for games played from the HD?
Lower reading times, even hybrid drive can give nice boost.
If game has texture streaming the difference can also be visible during gameplay. (IE. Rage and UE3 games.)
Thanks. I remember reading about 'protected data' on the hard drive and am not sure about how to copy the drive, I'll take a look.
If savegames are protected, the only way to transfer them is through psn+ cloud storage.

SSD or go home.

As an aside...re:Bluray

If SD cards can be 64GB, SD cards with mask roms should be capable of the same, so why are we still using obsolete media with 7 day access times and kilobytes/megabytes per second transfers? Get with the 21st century. Nobody does things in 5 MB/s anymore, at least I dont.
