My Girlfriend has a powerbook with only 40gb of storage. She needs more room, of course, for her rather large music collection. Should I price an internal and would it be easy for me to do myself (do it all time with pc notebooks but never mac) or I was lookng at one of these two externals because she thinks they are "cute". Also if we go with externals which of these would you recommend?

I'll recommend choosing the USB drive from FD since it does not require an external power supply to ran it. Otherwise the two units are almost identical. As for switching the laptop hdd, if you are confident on doing this, buy the first external hdd and then take the hdd and swap it with the 40gb hdd. Make the 40gb as the external storage while using the new 80gb as the internal hdd for the laptop. Of course this will involve more work since you have to clone the 40gb to the new 80 gb. But if the 40gb performance is better than the new hdd (i.e. 7200RPM and bigger cache) then you might just as well leave it alone and just use the new hdd as external. IMO.
