Ok, long story short:

Not long after i found a sweet deal and upgraded my xp2200 t-bred to a xp2800 barton, I found a too-good-to-pass-up deal on an xp3000 and i failed to pass it up. Since my final cost on the 2800 wasnt high at all i figured i could sell the 2800 for what i paid for the 3000, which is likely true, i only need to get $100 for the 3 week old retail 2800 to cover the cost of the 3000.

Both are retail chips, the xp 2800 is in my comp running it at the moment, the xp 3000 is nestled snugly in its un-opened plastic box. I could sell the 2800 and install the 3000 and break even or i could keep the 2800 and sell the 3000 for prolly $135 or so making a little profit towards the geforce 6800 I would like to purchase in the near future.

I'm not running a mobile as my current mobo and memory are only good to 166fsb and from what i've read people get the most out of the mobiles by running 200fsb.

Is there any real practical advantage to the 3000 over the 2800 or am i just spinning my wheels over something totally trivial?

Ok, well that wasnt all that short but, uhh, i tried

its better to upgrade to an athlon 64 2800+. currently, its cheaper to get the athlon 64 2800+ then the xp3200 and the athlon 64 is faster hten the xp 3200+. if you dont want to buy a new mobo, then just overclock your xp 2800 by just increasing the fsb in the bios. bring the multiplier to 11 and the fsb to 200 and ta da, u got urself an xp 3200+. you can prob go furher also. but to answer your question, its a waste of money on buying the xp 3200+. the xp 3200+ and the xp2500+ are the same thing, except that the 3200+ has the fsb upped to 200. if you want mroe help in overclockign it, just pm me. :)

I appreciate the feedback, but im not sure you understood my question really, heh. I have, in my appartment, both the 2800 and the 3000. I dont have, nor do i plan on buying a xp3200. The 2800 i have is not a mobile, and the multiplier is locked. I tried running it at 11x200 just for kicks when i 1st got it, wouldnt even post so thats not an option. I would have to buy not only a new motherboard, but new ram as well to run at 200fsb, the ram I have is value 2700 and isnt likely to run at 200fsb. I have a gig of ram as well, so it wouldnt be a cheap upgrade.

Yeah, Im going to move to the 64 bit athlons eventually but not just at the moment. To do that i would need a new processor, motherboard and ram. Performance wise I think i will see a lot bigger improvement by upgrading to a GF 6800GT for about the same or less than what the 64 set up would cost me.

I'd keep the 2800 and sell the 3000, the performance gains are negligible and the money towards the 6800 would be golden.

Yeah, i think thats what im going to do. The added advantage of selling the 3000 is that its still sealed in its retail packaging, a lot more attractive to a potential buyer than a used 2800 that they have to take my word is less than a month old. Now the question is, do i sell it now, or wait till the annouced price hike for the xp line hits? Fuggit, im putting it up on craigslist now :p
