upgrading from XP SP2 to Vista

does upgrading from one Microsoft OS to another impact computer performance. I remember back in the 90s they say upgrading from 98 to 2000 will negatively affect your computer's performance so I never upgraded - just formatted and reinstalled everything.

I have a lot of stuff on my computer and a dozen VST plugins so reinstalling everything would be a pain in the ass

what do you think? is upgrading to vista an ok option?

thanks

No personal experience, but I've read the XP -> Vista upgrade is the smoothest, easiest upgrade MS has offered. That said, I'd back up my data and start from scratch. 😉

I've done upgrades from 2K -> XP at work and after the upgrade was complete, it would blue screen.

95 to 98 and 98 to ME were about the same

ME..... ugh.

I tried upgrading from XP to Vista and nothing worked after. I ended up having to format the drive and install fresh.

i upgraded my main box (winxp sp2) to vista without problems after I removed IIS (which is not installed by default) and some other things which I doubt you have installed.

I stayed with vista for around 14 days iirc, mainly as a test so i would know what would and would not break (software and hardware).

if you have any problems upgrading, post in these forums or PM me.

if upgrade failed (like when i did not uninstall IIS before upgrading) it says: windows could not configure one or more system components
to install windows, restart the computer and restart the installation

at some point you will come to this part:
8;48 "completing upgrade ..."
8;56 "completing upgrade (25%) ..."
9:02 41%
9:10 55%
9:12 ?? noticed it rebooted. when it came back it was at 64% (9;14)
9:17 75%
9:21 it rebooted again.
when it came back, it was done.
-------

after you upgrade to vista:
> c:\$WINDOWS.~Q
contains 'old' data from your windows xp install. i went thru all of it and deleted around 80% of the stuff in there
the rest i'm keeping just in case. Many things in here were already moved over to the vista dirs, and it got nearly all of the 'application data','local settings' moved, the stuff left behind i either deleted or will keep in case.

> c:\$INPLACE.~TR
checked some things out, did some confirms, didn't need anything from it (it seemed to me) and ended up deleting this.

thanks for the tip! I'm one of those anal type who must go through every folder in program files and delete unused folders or files! your advices will come in handy

now to look for a copy of Vista...

oh yeah, I only want to upgrade to vista to get DirectX 10... i recently upgraded to 8800GT so I need DX10 now!

did the upgrade recently. Went thru smoothly. Like the new interface though.

The problem: the upgrade bug has me wanting to upgrade the hardware

For sure some things will take a performance hit, for example, I see people on the crysis forums complaining of worse FPS on vista compared to XP.

you will want to compare performance and determine if the performance loss is of any significance to you.

you could use PCMark05 to benchmark certain specific things.

EDIT: i will say that sonar 5 with the high-end Ivory Piano VST plugin I didn't have any problems on vista 32bit except for some minor clicks that didn't happen much - probably would help if I had more then 2gb of memory, but i don't currently.
Or perhaps if I had raised the ASIO buffer size more to avoid most or all pops/clicks.

yikes, i wanted to upgrade to play Crysis on DX10... 😛

is Vista finicky with drivers? I think my VST instruments will give me headaches for some reason... never really trusted audio software compatibility.

i'm unable to give a better answer but I was quite happy that my USB midi keyboard continued to work fine (it was again automatically detected after plugging in), and I was running sonar 5 without any problems it seemed, note it does not officially support vista. Sonar 6.2 adds vista support.

Upgrade and try it. You don't have anything to lose. As always, be sure to have recent backups of any important data before you do the upgrade.

If you aren't happy with the result, you can always do a clean install. You'll definitely need those data backups for that.

I've done lots of OS upgrades over the years, for myself and for others. The only time I had a serious problem was because of a failing memory module which messed up the upgrade.
