hey guys...

I have been planning to do this for quite some time now. I wanted to know whether not reformatting before installation is going to create massive problems... I really dont want to reinstall all those bits and pieces of software lying around :(

also, if I am upgrading, will both licenses be used up? will it be legal to use my copy of win XP home on another computer once this computer is upgraded to XP pro? I only have an upgrade disk...

The last thing I would do is to put Pro over Home. It's always safer to wipe out the old OS and install the new one. Not sure what you mean by "massive problems". Shouldn't be any. Personally, I don't think it's fun to re-install everything, but it isn't what I consider a problem. Just back up data that you want to keep.

The XP Pro upgrade will ask you for a previously purchased product disk (if you are installing it clean). I think you can use 95,98, 2k. I'm not a lawyer, but if you have XP home, as well as 98 or whatever, you should be able to put home on one computer, and pro on another since you ARE meeting the requirements in the EULA. Press on, activate, and be on your way.

Having said that, I've had to call MS in the past to activate because I installed it, then reinstalled it a couple of weeks later. (first install over 2k, XP worked ok, but was a bit *weird* so I formated and reinstalled it. Always heed your own advice :) ) After a few questions from the MS activation police, I was on my way.
