Hello. Because I'm going to be taking an MCSE exam on Windows 2000 Professional, I think I would like to install it as I can practice with it and because its more stable.

For anyone who has used WIN 98 and Win2k Pro, maybe you can answer a few questions I have about switching the O/S's.

1.I have a Celeron 300A with 128MB ram and a 6.4Gig HD. Do you think that my system will run any faster, slower or the same speed with the hardware I got??

2. If I use NTFS in W2K, will my HD become fragmented as it now does under WIN98's FAT32 system? (I use Napster a lot, so my HD gets fragmented quickly with WIN 98.)

3. Is it possible to upgrade from WIN98 to W2K Pro by using the Full Version of Windows 2000 Pro Install disc; or is it only possible with the Upgrade Version Disc of W2K Pro?

4. Is it better to do a clean install of W2K Pro, or is it just the same to upgrade from WIN98?

5. If I upgrade from 98 to Pro, will I have to re-install all of my Apps, or should they still work after an upgrade?

For anyone who might have upgraded from WIN 98 to W2Kpro, please let me know if you can answer any of the above questions. Thanks a lot

2. Think so...........it should get fragged, NTFS shouldnt make a diff
3. Think so...........
4. Clean install
5. It shoudl makea dual boot witht eh 98 apps intact and take the system hardware info from 98

1.I have a Celeron 300A with 128MB ram and a 6.4Gig HD. Do you think that my system will run any faster, slower or the same speed with the hardware I got??

----- It will probably run a little slower but not too much. My first Win2K system was a celeron 333 w/96MB ram which I later upgraded to 128. Seemed to run O.K.-----

2. If I use NTFS in W2K, will my HD become fragmented as it now does under WIN98's FAT32 system? (I use Napster a lot, so my HD gets fragmented quickly with WIN 98.)

---My drives still have a tendency to fragment also, I use napster also. The better thing about Win2K is that it allows you to analyze the drive first and then makes a recommendation as to whether or not to run Defrag----

3. Is it possible to upgrade from WIN98 to W2K Pro by using the Full Version of Windows 2000 Pro Install disc; or is it only possible with the Upgrade Version Disc of W2K Pro?

----- Full disc will work ----

4. Is it better to do a clean install of W2K Pro, or is it just the same to upgrade from WIN98?

--- Personal preference, I prefer the clean install if at all possible, it doesn't carry over any problems. ----

5. If I upgrade from 98 to Pro, will I have to re-install all of my Apps, or should they still work after an upgrade?

--- Most should still work, if you upgrade your existing O.S. the installer will provide a compatibilty list to point out any software or driver issues you might have. Then you can take the appropriate actions to resolve them.
