gonna do this today and just wondering if there is any tips or tricks i need to know.
do I need to back up my personal/data files (ie. will i lose anything in this upgrade?)
i have already done the compatability test and i know i will need to download drivers for several of my devices.

just looking for any general advice about this process.

thanks in advance for any info.

it should be smooth, MS allows you to upgrade from 98 to XP, so there won't be any inherent demons out to get you. Other than the drivers, the only thing you'll have to do is reformat into NTFS, and do product activation (provided you are using a legitimate copy of xp).

Heh, indeed that is true 😛 But he didn't make it clear that he wanted to install over FAT32 so...I figured I'd drop an extra 1/2 cent in with the 2 cents I already chucked his way.

its works well with FAT32, but better with NTFS... plus, FAT is old, give it up...

I would recommend you backup all your data, then run the file and settings transfer wizard from the winxp disk, and back that data up as well..... then format the sucker and install clean. Then retrieve your backups and use the file and settings transfer wizard to restore your windows settings...

You will have to re-install all apps, but it is REALLY worth it in the long run... the machine will be faster and more stable.

Its true. I have done an upgrade to Win Xp pro using both methods. Even though upgrading is easier you system stays junky and slow. If you do a clean in stall on a NTFS partion the system runs much smoother. I would recomend cloaning your hardrive to a spare. Then wipe and reformat your main one, in stall clean then use a program like PC upgrade comandor to move all your programs over. It will also move your settings and tell you if any programs are going to have conflics. The compadability test will not catch them all. Just my 2 cents.
