Has anybody done this? Did it require an OS re-install?

I have my two brand new 1800+'s sitting here, & my Tiger MP with two 1200's currently running.

I'm dying to put them in, but I really don't want to have to re-install Windows right now.

Will I have to, or can I get away with not doing it for a week?

Well if what I understand is correct then you'll have to re-install to enable the SSE extentions of the XP

I did not do a fresh install immediately after swapping my T-Birds for some XP's.

I did, however, install Windows XP after a few months. Prior to that I had no problems with win2k, but I never benchmarked anything to see if a change made a difference. Plus it would be hard to compare the two OS's anyway, in that respect.

I don't think a fresh install would resolve the SSE issue; as natively windows 2000 was not configured to see and AMD processor using SSE. I recall a patch being required in order to resolve that "naming scheme" to identify SSE processors. It seems a few of us believe the Microsoft update site has an XP processor patch that corrects that very issue as we discussed in previous threads.

Take that for what it is worth though. No one could "prove" it definitively, but it makes sense.

Well, that was relatively painless. Getting the damn things into the sockets was a pain in the ass (I have NEVER had so much trouble installing a CPU before. The Tbirds would drop in under their own weight, but the XPs simply wouldn't drop down. Took me quite a while to get them in. :|). Up & running, no errors, & working beautifully.

:)

I'll be re-installing in a week anyway (When I get XP Pro from the MS event I'm going to), so for now I'm good no matter what the case is.

Off to find the SSE patch (although Sandra is recognizing the SSE capability, so maybe I don't need it?).
