Upgrading from Socket A to 939, recommendations on setup?

I have been out of the loop for a couple years (had to make a new user name on here because I couldn't remember my old one.)

Im upgrading my socket A XP 2100 +, 512 MB 266mhz RAM, Geforce 4 Ti4600 setup.

I would like my new setup to last about 2 years with my upgrade.

I'd like to keep the cost under $700 total. I'm thinking about going with a socket 939 mobo and something like a 3700+ athlon 64. I plan on putting in 1 gig of RAM to start with.

What model mobo, video card, kinda of RAM, and CPU would maximize my performance for this budget? Does it make sense to buy a board with PCI express vs. AGP? Which products have you guys currently had good luck with?

I just want the best performance/stability with these components, I don't plan on overclocking at all.

Thanks,
Tyler

best price performance? i'm not gonna find links but:
cheap 754 mobo 50
3000 110
agp 6800gt/x800 xl 250
1gb 3200 80

Its one I got a couple years ago from TigerDirect TTGI 400SS, it has been very good to me although I've never really put it to the test. It seems to put out clean power and has ball bearing fans. The 12V+ is rated to put out 16A worth of current if thats what you mean.

I can only tell you what I learned from my recent build:

Don't buy:
- MSI mobo if you plan to overclock
- Corsair XMS RAM

Do buy:
- Seasonic S12-600
- Corsair Value Select RAM
- Athlon64 3000/3200+ E3

Does anyone have an opinion as to how a 6800GT might affect my current systems performance? I have AGP 4x, XP 2100+, 512 MB 266mhz RAM. Do I need AGP 8x to get a major performance boost over my current card?

The 6800gt will smoke your current ti card. 4x, 8x - coke / pepsi, games will run the same, benchmarks will tell you the same.

I would not bother getting a socket 754 board. 939 will be supported well into 2006 and into early 2007, but AMD might not make chips for it beyond the launch of M2.

Even semprons are going S939

For a mobo i would get an nforce 4 ultra board. Doesn't matter much which one, as long it's a decent brand. DFI, asus, and msi are all good. For CPU i'd get an athlon 64 3000, or maybe a 3200 if you don't mind paying a bit more.

For vid card it all depends on what you want to spend. If you can afford it i'd get a 7800gt, since it's the only decent affordable new generation card. Otherwise 6800gt or x800xl are good.

Since you don't plan to overclock I would get a s939 3700+ or 3500+, the 3700+ if you can afford it. Then I would add a good MB, probably the DFI Infinity, because even if you won't use the OC'ing options its cheap, and without a doubt a 6800GS. Add however much memory you think is appropriate and you have a pretty nice setup:

CPU - 3700+ $233
GPU - GS $199
MB - DFI $100
Memory - 2 x 512 meg at like $150 or less

Total - $682

If you want to spend more, spend another hundred on a 7800GT, but I wouldnt sweat it too much if your display is 1280x1024 or less. Past that consider 2 gigs (mainly for BF2 and FEAR right now) and then a 4000+.

Yeah Im going with a DFI lan party board, opteron 148, 1 gig OCZ pc3200 copper (2-3-3-6) ram, and a 6800 gs. Most of the stuff from monarchcomputer.com and new egg. All less than $700.

Thanks for bringing me back up to par with this stuff.
