Upgrading from Q6600 @ 3.8 Ghz.

I don't have this currently but I had it back in the day (circa 2008/9) and used it overclocked to 3.6/8 ghz. My current config is in my signature. Was thinking of upgrading to a Haswell i5 4440 which is clocked @ 3.1 Ghz. Can't find benchmarks comparing Q6600 @ 3.6 to i5 440 running at stock 3.1. How much gain can I experience?

Thats a stock clock to clock comparison. I am talking about Q6600 @ 3.6 VS 4440 @ 3.1 because I won't overclock this chip.

You aren't likely to find the exact benchmark you're looking for. If you want to know how much faster, find some benchmarks of the CPU you want, then run those same benchmarks on your current system and compare.

Skip the low clocked and slow base i5 and pick up a 4670 non K at least. MCE would turbo all cores on load to 3.8GHz and 50% would be on the low side for a guesstimate.

I don't play games. Its just in my head "To own a quad again" nothing much hence decided on the entry level quady All I do is watch movies (sometimes 3D) and browse (as of now )

Not sure that you'd notice a massive difference if you're not encoding or gaming. I have a Xeon E5450 on a p45 board at 3.82 (450 x 8.5) Ghz. that I'm using as the office computer. It's still as fast as some of the lower I5 amd I7 setups, at least according to synthetic benches and smy calibrated seat of the pants.

IF you just want to upgrade to a newer CPU, by all means do so. I'd follow escrow4's advice and get the 4790 non-k (probably the s variant)

Q6600 @ 3.8 GHz vs. i5 4440 @ 3.1 GHz? For Povray rendering the i5 could be about 20% faster. Or Blender Cycles rendering could be about 50% faster (haven't posted data, need more testing).

That's not the best score just the best comparison. I searched the lower end Haswells for a screen shot. The 4440 seems to score anywhere from 5800 to 7100. A Q6600 is not going to be able to get there. 45 nm is about 10% faster per clock and overclocks better. All Conroes really scale well with speed too.

The 4440 is faster. The q6600 is going to need to be clocked at 4.5 ghz to even be close. Even if it could it would not be 24/7 stable like the i5 4440 is. It's no contest.

Same architecture, higher clocks. That is why.

Main diffrence between i3 and Pentium is HyperThreading, better iGPU and more cache.

It will show diffrence if you're:
a) multitasking a lot
b) use many or hardware intensive background applications
c) play games
d) do some multithreaded computing


CPU is not simply about faster slower. It all depends what tasks you need it to do.

GHz doesnt tell all the difference. The Q6600 has a FSB, which makes it lag more during context switching. Not only does the newer i5 have more execution units, but the memory and cache latencies are cut in half. The i5-4440 will feel significantly faster in every way. Your sunspider score should be around 4 times as fast, so most web pages will load and "become fully usable" 4 times faster.
