Upgrading from P4 1.7GHz to 2.4GHz help?

Ok, I am considering upgrading my 1.7GHz P4 (400mhz FSB) to a 2.4GHz of equal bus speed. The computer is a Dell Dimension 8100 running XP Pro. Will I have any issues with this upgrade? I consider myself above average compentance with computer upgrades, but have never done a CPU before.

Are there any special tools I will need?
Will Windows freak out once it finds that I've changed the CPU (different speed, more cache @ 512k)?

The more advice the better, I dont want to screw anything up.

Thanks for the help.

Ummmmm....You can't
The dimension 8100 1.5 and 1.7Ghz models are willamette cores based on Socket 423. That means that you can only go up to 2gh using socket 423. That also means that you can only use those hot running willamette cores which have 256k of cache. You would need socket 478 to get a .13u northwood at speeds higher than 2ghz. Sorry, you're out of luck. I would advise an upgrade to that video card EUGH!

Well damn... I was unaware of the socket change b/t Williamette and Northwood🙁 Upgrading to only a 2.0Ghz probably wouldnt be worth it at the moment though.

by the way, what did you mean by upgrading my video card?

Not all willamettes are 423 but your is. What I meant is that if you have the original video card it needs to be upgraded if you play games for sure.

Not neccessarily, there's socket 478 Willys, I should know, I had one in my P4S333 before I eventually got my 1.6a. 😉

It happens to have the original video card in it. Its a Radeon 32MB DDR. It plays most games well enough, though its a little sluggish on the "Spiderman the Movie" game I just got. I'm not a big PC gamer, so this upgrade isnt very high on my list of priorities, but I'm keeping the Ti4200 in mind for the near future.

CrawlingEye, what are you talking about? I clearly said in my second post that not all willamettes are 423. However, he has a 423 board and there are NO 423 northwoods.

You wouldn't see much difference between 1.7G and 2.4G anyway. Trust me, I just overclocked my 1.6 to 2.4 🙂 Definitely not worth the money. If it's game performance that's got you down then get a new video card, it'll make a bigger difference.

Actually, Im getting into home video... I just bought a DV camcorder.

I'm not a real big gamer, so 3D performance isnt a huge priority

My mistake, I didn't see the second post. 🙂
