Alright guys. I'm sticking with my current rig until I graduate from college this December. I have the Gigabyte Nforce 2 and in it is the AMD XP 2600+. I'm going to squeeze as much as I can before I upgrade to current standards. In the meantime my system still runs great and plays all games reasonable.

So should I do one last upgrade on the processor? Should I go from my current AMD 2600 to the 3200? I'm upgrading my video card as well. I'm going to be upgrading from the Geforce 5900 to the Geforce 6800 so I want to be able to get as much power as I can out of this video card.

Is the processor worth the upgrade? I can buy one for only $125.00

Thanks.

im finding my athlon xp 2700+ to be insufficient power in games such as half life 2, doom 3, and battlefield 2. constant dips into the 20's as far as fps goes.

Personally, I wouldn't. A 3200+ is going to be better than your 2600+, but not all that much. You say it runs the games you want to play reasonably. Plus you mention you're in college, so probably cound stand to save $125. Personally, I'd try to stick it out and wait.

NO.
Judging by your current PC you have AGP, DDR 2700 ram at least possibly PC3200.

I would get a little more cash together and do this.

Athlon 64 3000+ 149.99
Refurbished Nforce 3 250 motherboard would be something like 40.00-50.00 at newegg.

Now were at 200.00 but depending on your ram you could get a decent overclock and this will be significantly faster. Even at stock speed its much much faster.

Interesting...

I have my mobile at speeds of 2.4ghz or 1.8 and I don't see a diff in games etc.

IDK if your mobo supports it, but if it does, go with an XP/M 2600+. It will clock much better than either the 2600+ or 3200+, and is quite a bit less money than the 3200+.

there is a difference in half-life from 1.8 to 2.2 to 2.6 with an xp-m, its not much, a little smoother, a few higher fps on average, probably better to save a bit more and get a 939 3000 and a nf3
