Upgrading from my AMD XP1700 @ 2ghz to a P4 Prescott w/2megs cache - how to do without losing my system?

I know there is info somewhere about doing this, but can't place it atm.
I have WinXP Pro SP1 on CD, and am running Win XP Pro SP1 with the MS fixes (no SP2).
I've got a ton of software installed.
Will be changing out only the Mobo & CPU - all else remains the same.

Thanks Freewolf - that looks like it will work fine when I upgrade the wife's A7V266 (nforce1) mobo to the A7N8X (nforce2 mobo) but I'm making radical changes here, completely different chipset, AMD -> iNtel, different sound drivers, different LAN drivers, etc...

I'm wondering if doing it via the repair install would work better/easier in my case?

Crud - also going from single processor build to multi processor build :(
This is getting complicated.

Based on this I dont think you can do it. As I remember Windows builds its install on how many processors you have in the system. You can have less, but not more than the original install. Its been a while since I have switched out a board without a format though.

There is a process for switching in XP. I'm wondering though if a repair install will detect the multiprocessor?

Wiz: From the guide linked above:

Do I need to change the PC Type (ie. ACPI Uniproc to Standard PC)?
You can change freely between ACPI types, but not from ACPI to Standard or back again. So you can go from ACPI Uniproc to ACPI Multiproc (even on a uniproc system) and expect no problems.

As long as it's an ACPI type proc, you are good to go. :)

Use Linux! ;)

You then just have to keep your /home directory and format the system before installing the new one. ;)
I have moved my home server from a C600 to a XP1800+ with no prob. :)

BTW, Good luck with your upgrade.

Unless your going from an Intel to an AMD processor, you should be ok. (According to those instructions)

I have done the Repair Install a number of time. You have to load all the hot fixes again, but you USUALLY keep all application. It has been known to blow up. My latest attempt gave me a prob due to Media Player 9; 10 would do the same thing. It says it can't find something and you click continue, but you end up doing it 200+ times and then it is ok. Try uninstalling MP 9 first if you have it. I learned this last trick from a Google groups search. I thought I was hosed till I did this.

Lets just say I'm heavily invested in this install.

I haven't decided whether I'll try the repair or the Sysprep method.

ok, Im screwed

I tried the sysprep method, but I think I messed up two things.
1. I checked the button to have it NOT create new SID
2. I had a custom boot mod that I forgot to remove

So, the mini setup started - I went through a few screens and then it gave an error.
That's all it would do, over and over.

So I put in the XP CD & tried repair.
It copies files and then reboots tp a blank screen - it's supposed to be continuing to install. Keyboard lites won't go on/off.

That's where it is. Anybody got an idea?

update:

I went into recovery console and deleted boot.ini and then told it to make a new one.
Afterwards it booted into the setup screen like it should have several hours ago.

If (&when) I get all this done, I'll post some OC results & some seti times ;)

Playing around I had it posting @ 3.75ghz :D

That's essentially what it ended up being. Sysprep didn't work for me.
Upgrade install failed due to boot.ini trouble.

Now typing from a "fully operational battle station".
