Upgrading from freebie ISP router

Hi!

I just got an android box to stream TV, and I am having issues that my network speed isn't sufficient on WIFI to support HD streaming... after testing I'm finding 3mbit speeds! And under 1mbit upload! Abysmal!

I could easily just call Telus and get them to replace the router with whatever is the new free one, but I figure it won't be nearly as good as one I can buy myself?

Budget is ~$200-$250usd... my house is ~75' long and 14' wide (mobile home) and I want fast internet in by bedroom. I currently have a WIFI booster just under half-way but it's boosting a crap signal currently.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

It's not the router. It's the your speed tier. You'll need to call them up to up your speed. If it's DSL, where you are located can be the limiting factor. If that's the fastest they can provide you at your location, you'll need to look into other options... cable/fiber/etc.

Wired directly to the router I am at ~30mbit, wireless is at 3.

I have fiber available to me, and will be upgrading my internet speed as well.

Oh ok. 30 isn't bad. Sounds like a wireless issue then. 3 is very bad wireless. Often just elevating your WiFi router helps. Otherwise you'll need to relocate it. However since it's a streaming device, if it has Ethernet, then that's the best option... if possible.

Yes it works fine plugged in.
I also did a speed test on a laptop and my cell phone and they are all 3mbps down and 1mbps up.. so the wifi is screwed...

I need a new router and am looking for recommendations 🙂

That works both ways. The router can broadcast a signal to the moon but if the android TV box can't punch a signal back to where the router is, you're stuck.

Wifi sucks. Run a wire.
He already said his other devices get garbage WiFi speeds too.

Sure wired is better but he also obviously needs a new router anyway and if the new router let's the android box work without running a wire that's even better

Are there any legacy devices connected to the network? That will slow older routers down to that device's max speed, so if you have a wireless b device that will limit the entire wireless network to wireless b speeds. Change the wireless password, then connect and test the Android box to see what speeds you get when it's the only device on the network.

Oh, also, make sure the router really was a "freebie" - a lot of people are paying $5 to rent the darned things and don't realize it.

True.

A better router can help a lot, but I don't want to give the poor guy unreasonably high expectations. ;-)
