Upgrading from AMD 1700+ to Barton 2500+ - Worth the $87?

Looking at maybe upgrading my processor, but I'm stuck on whether to wait and just get a next-gen system.

Since the new AMD and Intel chips are due to be released, is the speed increase from the Barton worthwhile until the new chips & mobo's mature, or should I just wait?

I'm overclocking it now, running @ 166 FSB. My plan would be to also overclock the Barton as well

The 1700XP is one helluva chip. I have two. My Rev A can run flawlessly at 166x11 (same speed, but faster than a 2200XP) and my Rev B runs at 12x167 and boots up as a 2400XP. Both chips costed me about $50 each at the time.

Well, it's gonna be a while before the Athlon-64 has a bunch of 64 bit apps to really unleash it... and don't count on Windows XP 64bit edition being stable upon release. I'd say go ahead with a Barton... you'll probably get 2.2 Ghz out of it.

Speaking of Bartons and 2.2 Ghz... does anyone have an XP3200 and would be so kind as to share the stepping with us?

I guess it depends on whether your 1700+ is a Tbred Rev A or Rev B, and whether you are using PC3200 RAM. If you have a Rev B there's probably not much point. If it's an A (limited overclockability), and you have the PC3200, the Barton for ~$85 may be a good option as it should easily run at 400MHz FSB as a 3000+ or even 3200+.

If that 1700+ was at stock settings...yeah its worth it considering you are going from 1.47 to 1.83 and getting that extra cache for only 87 dollars

but if you also plan to oc it to like 2.1 Ghz that is a HELL yeah
