Upgrading from a GeForce 4200 Ti to a 6800GT. I'm wondering which manufacture to go with.

I'd assume he's working with an agp board since he says he's got a 4200. He could be looking at a 6800gt agp model which he could use in the same mb. A 6800gs is pcie only which means he almost definitely will have to upgrade his mb, possibly memory and processor too depending on what they are. Over all thats definitely going to make the 6800gs more expensive but the 6800gs will have a better lifespan. Your next motherboard will be pci express unless you specifically go out of your way to stay agp. Personally I bit the bullet and upgraded mb, processor and video card since I knew I didn't want to buy a videocard now for 200+ bucks and just have to replace it when I wanted to upgrade my processor in the next 6 months to a year.

If your already going pci express then i'd definitely say no reason not to go with a 6800gs instead of the gt. Very simular performance for 200$ give or take a couple bucks, fully functional pure video and seems to run cooler and less power. If your willing to take a gamble on unlocking and overclocking the x800 gto can be a great deal but for stock performance the 6800gs seems to be the obvious choice unless your willing to spend 300ish for a 7800gt.
toattett you say that the 68gs is no good? I like what the others have said. Why do you give it a thumbs down?
If I go with the GS like you guys are saying which manufacture would you go with. Albatron would be my choice. Anything wrong with them or what?
EVGA from Monarchcomputer.com is about the cheapest I can find, but i've never owned an EVGA video card before.

A 7800GT will give you a lot more performance over the 6800GS, it will also give you transparency anti-aliasing.
The 6800GS is still a very decent card for the money however.
EDIT: the 6800GS should be SLI compatible, but verify the model you want to purchase actually is. The card will have an SLI header at the top of the card.

6800gs is indeed a good card for under $210. However, I thought you are looking for a AGP card since you are upgrading from a ti4200 which is AGP only, and the 6800GS is PCI-E only.
If indeed you are looking for a PCI-E video card, and I saw that you were planning to spend $284, then the 7800GT would be a great choice because it way way way faster than the 6800GT; it's less hot and uses less power.
SLI is pointless for these kind of video cards because one 7800GT is probably as good if not better than a pair of 6800GTs in SLI.
I like to play games but it's not my life. I need a card that will do well with all games out there now.
