Upgrading from a 42" 1080p

I have one of the first generation Vizio 1080p sets and it's served very well. Was an amazing upgrade from a 27" CRT Tube.

I've got a little $ to burn, wondering what kind of experience difference you could get going from 42" to say, 55".

My couch is about 10-13ft away from the TV

Huge difference.

I will say for that viewing distance I might even go bigger. I have a 65 inch TV for a 9-10 foot viewing distance and its perfect.

Any stomach for projector? motorised screen drops down to cover 42"

I'd go bigger if you can. I"m at 12' with a 55" and it definitely feels small. I wanted a DLP but what I wanted wasn't on sale when I had to have something so I went with the plasma. I was going to go with a 72" and still feel that was the right choice, maybe in a couple years this one will start feeling old.

I went from 37 -> 40 -> 50 -> 60. 40 -> 50 was noticeable. 50 -> 60 not so much, at the same viewing distance. Until I saw my old 50" in my mothers living room, and it felt like a 32" set. When I used to see some of my friends 60" sets I thought it was huge, but when you look at one for a few days you get used to it pretty quick. Part of it might be because the bezel is fairly thin and the stands are much lower these days. 42 -> 55 is a significant leap, but dont expect to be impressed with that size for long. It would be a good upgrade at your viewing distance, but I'm at around 10' and feel a 65" or 70" would be about right.

If you watch a lot of movies (or if you are a sports guy), then I'd say go for 60 inches or bigger, if it's too expensive, put the money in savings, and wait until you can afford it ...


I am 8 feet from a 106 inch in the front row, and about 12 feet for the back row, and it's perfect.
